Sustainability
First of all
Our Nature
The Azores are a green treasure in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, globally recognised as a destination of excellence in sustainability. At the Azores Youth Hostels, we know that the privilege of living and sharing these islands brings with it a great responsibility: to protect our archipelago.
We believe that youth and adventure tourism should go hand in hand with respect for the environment, local communities, and our cultural heritage.

Daily Commitment
- Energy and Water Efficiency We have implemented flow reducers in taps and showers and are promoting the use of low-consumption LED lighting throughout our facilities.
- Waste Management We are actively reducing the use of single-use plastics and providing accessible recycling points in all communal areas to ensure effective recycling.
- Circular Economy and Local Trade We prioritise Azorean suppliers and regional products. By dining at our inns, you are directly supporting farmers and producers from our islands.
- Community Integration: We work with local guides and small nature tourism companies, promoting fair and decentralised development of the Azorean economy.
Your Role
Our Mission
- Save the Resources Hot baths are nice after a hike, but try to keep them brief. Turn off the lights and equipment when you leave the room.
- Always Recycle Use the recycling points located throughout the inn. If you have any doubts about where to dispose of waste, our team is here to help.
- Bring Your Bottle Tap water in the Azores is of excellent quality. Use a reusable bottle and avoid buying plastic water.
- Respect the Tracks When exploring nature, leave nothing behind but your footprints. Do not collect plants or stones, and respect the wildlife.
- “The true voyage of discovery lies not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” – And it is with this vision of respect and care that we invite you to explore the Azores with us.

Certifications and Partnerships
We are continuously working to align our practices with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and actively participate in the initiatives of the Azores Sustainability Charter. We know that the path to total sustainability is long and ever-evolving, but we are committed to taking one step at a time, every day.
We are always open to new ideas. If you have any suggestions on how we can make our inns even more eco-friendly, please share them with us at reception!
